I just scanned this other review. FYI, the book, which came out in 1992, was equally so-so, although it got a ton of attention because America is fascinated with crazy women. I suspect Mangold (I didn't notice who wrote the screenplay) needed some help moving beyond the basic blandness of the property he was dealt.
